Lewis County

Created 1843 from Hickman, Lawrence, Maury and Wayne counties; named in honor of Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809), appointee of President Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Purchase in 1804 who died violently on the Natchez Trace.

Did You Know?Lewis County is where Meriwether Lewis died and is buried. Lewis served as President Thomas Jeffereson's private secretary, led the Meriwether/Lewis expedition out west, and served as Governor of the Louisana Territory for some time. He has been called one of America's greatest pathfinders.
