South Jersey Eligible for $10M in Energy Efficiency Projects
Earlier this month, the Department of Energy announced that more than $3.2 billion in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be invested nationally to support energy efficiency and conservation activities. These awards are the first ever under DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program, which funds local community projects designed to help towns improve their energy efficiency, reduce their energy use and fossil fuel emissions, and create green jobs locally.
Statewide, New Jersey qualifies for approximately $75 million dollars in aid, including funds appropriated to the New Jersey State Energy Office, various counties, and approximately 66 municipalities. South Jersey’s portion of the funding is estimated at $10 million, including over $7.25 million combined for Camden, Gloucester, and Burlington counties as well as over $2.25 million for various municipalities within the First Congressional District. To obtain these EECBG block grants, the federal government requires that each recipient submit an application disclosing their energy efficient projects. Activities eligible for EECBG funding include energy audits and building retrofits in the residential and commercial sector, the development and implementation of advanced building codes and inspections, and the creation of financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements.
As with the vast majority of Recovery funds, the EECBG program strongly emphasizes the need to quickly award the recipients in order to generate an immediate demand for new jobs and stimulate local economies. Thus, Rep. Andrews continues to work with local recipients to ensure that they obtain their allocation to ensure that South Jersey experiences the economic growth intended under the Stimulus bill. Below is a breakdown of South Jersey’s eligibility:
Burlington County - $3,051,700 Camden County - $2,046,700 Gloucester County - $2,155,400 Camden City - $780,200 Pennsauken - $154,900 Winslow - $153,500 Gloucester Township - $564,900 Monroe Township - $149,600 Washington Township - $467,400
