Andrews Announces Much-Needed Boost in Minimum Wage
Late last month, Congressman Andrews was proud to announce that millions of struggling workers across America will receive a much-needed pay raise. On July 24, the national minimum wage increased by 70 cents – from $6.55 per hour to $7.25 per hour – the final of three increases to take effect under H.R. 2: The Fair Minimum Wage Act, which passed the 110th Congress in 2007.
Last month’s pay raise will help nearly 13 million Americans nationwide, providing low income families with an additional $120 a month to help make ends meet. Over sixty percent of those who will benefit from the increase are women, and over 400,000 of them are single parents with kids under 18. In addition to the benefits that struggling families will receive, the wage increase is expected to improve our struggling economy. The Economic Policy Institute estimated that the increased wages will boost consumer spending by more than $5.5 billion over the next 12 months, as significantly more money will be spent on grocery bills, gas for cars, and other day-to-day needs.
“This pay raise will lift millions of families out of poverty, and it comes at a time when low income Americans need it the most,” said Rep. Andrews. “As our economy continues to suffer, millions of Americas are unable to spend their hard-earned dollars and make ends meet. Yet, this much-needed wage increase will provide the relief needed so that families can meet their needs and stimulate consumer markets, triggering the economic growth that our country so desperately needs.”
Among the top priorities for the 111th Congress, Rep. Andrews remains dedicated to serving working Americans during the current recession. Especially in this economy, Rep. Andrews continues to work with Congressional leaders to look at solutions that will help all Americans build a better life for themselves and their families.
