Camden City Receives $2M Stimulus Boost for Water Infrastructure Improvements

Congressman Andrews announced today that the City of Camden will receive more than $2 Million in federal funding from the Environmental Infrastructure Financing Program (EIFP). Supported by federal dollars through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the EIFP provides municipalities with low-interest loans for a variety of water infrastructure improvements while serving the overall purpose of the ARRA – to jumpstart the U.S. economy and create or save millions of jobs.

This grant money will be used to maintain or replace dated water structures throughout Camden, primarily in the Fairview neighborhood. Projects include replacing or maintaining over 400 fire hydrants, 100 water valves, lead lines, and up to water 5,000 water meters. These efforts will not only make our communities and drinking water safer by constructing new or improving existing firewater, wastewater, storm water structures, but will also generate new opportunities for job creation. Over $169 Million has been invested into this effort statewide and the project is expected to support thousands of jobs throughout New Jersey, from skilled engineers and technicians to construction workers.

“Improving our region’s water infrastructure allows us to address major issues such as having access to healthy drinking water and keeping our environment safe. Yet, while addressing these concerns we are able to put people back to work and start to rebuild our economy,” said Rep. Andrews.

While our region's economic recovery will not occur overnight, the Stimulus bill’s near $360 million investment in South Jersey has funded projects just like this that have begun to set our region on the course of economic prosperity. Congressman Andrews continues to support legislation like the ARRA that invests federal dollars where they are needed most, while working to get our economy back on the course of long-term growth.
