Andrews Announces $400k to Aid Victims of Domestic Violence

Congressman Andrews announced today that the Center For Family Services, Inc. in Camden City was awarded $399,799 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) Transitional Housing Assistance Program. Supported by federal dollars through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), this program provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking who are in need of temporary housing and related support services.

Among the program’s many goals, this funding will enable the Center For Family Services to employ victim advocates and other personnel to assist victims, such as mentors to provide victim counseling and skilled laborers to renovate and construct housing for victims. Additionally, the funding will enable the Center For Family Services to increasing job opportunities for victims themselves by expanding its training and education support services. Thus, by generating new opportunities for economic growth and employment assistance, the Transitional Housing Assistance Program helps serve the overall purpose of the ARRA – to jumpstart the U.S. economy and create or save millions of jobs.

“As our economy continues to struggle, many social service institutions are facing face budget cuts. With resources depleting, many victims of domestic violence are not receiving the services they need,” said Congressman Andrews. “This funding is critical because it relieves the strain on their operating budget, allowing them to free up the money needed to protect these victims of domestic violence while creating opportunities for economic growth.”

While our economy has experienced recent growth and America is beginning to dig its way out of recession, millions continue to struggle to make ends meet. Congressman Andrews continues to support key legislation like the American Recovery and Recovery Act that provides resources for women escaping violent relationships and supplies them with the help needed to transition into more stable, self-sufficient lives.
