Congressman Andrews Announces $1.46 Million for Veterans’ Bus Services and High Tech Jobs

Haddon Heights, NJ – Today, Congressman Andrews announced that the United States Department of Transportation has awarded a $1.46 million grant to New Jersey Transit to better serve South Jersey Veterans’ transportation needs and create high-tech jobs. The money will be used to modernize the Camden Travel Management and Coordination Center (TMCC) with new in-vehicle technology, including cameras and computers that will help drivers locate passengers. The installation of this new technology will create an immediate demand for skilled electricians and IT workers in South Jersey, which is significant given our current job crisis.

Our veterans have sacrificed so much through their service and supporting their needs here at home needs to be a top priority. With that in mind, Congressman Andrews voted for transportation legislation in 2005 that boosted federal aid for the Veterans Transportation and Community Living Initiative Program, which is designed to improve transportation options and mobility for America's veterans, service members, and their families. These added funds have made it possible for millions of veterans – many of which are elderly and disabled – to travel throughout their communities by shuttle bus, making it possible for them to lead healthier and more productive lives. The brave men and women who sacrificed to preserve our freedoms should not have to struggle without basic transportation services.

“A large number of our older veterans are disabled and rely heavily on public transportation. As we wind down operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, more and more veterans are returning home that will rely on these vital services,” said Congressman Andrews. “Without this program, many of our local vets wouldn’t be able to see their doctors, get their medications, make it to work, or even visit their families. Reliable transportation is extremely important to maintaining a good quality of life.”

In this month alone, the Veterans Transportation and Community Living Initiative Program has provided nearly $35 million for 55 projects nationwide to enhance access to local, affordable transportation for veterans and their families. Congressman Andrews will continue to support legislation that helps our veterans get the services they rightfully deserve so that they can lead healthier, more enjoyable lives.
