This Earth Day, Congress is Preparing to Take Action on Global Warming
As we commemorate Earth Day on April 22, we should all renew our commitment to fighting the causes of global warming. Throughout my Congressional career I have fought to uphold strict environmental standards, to limit greenhouse gas emissions, to promote cleaner, safer alternative energy sources, and to make our nation more energy efficient.
I am currently a cosponsor of HR 620, the Climate Stewardship Act. This bill provides for a program of scientific research on abrupt climate change. It would also accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States by establishing a market-driven system of "tradeable" greenhouse gas allowances that will limit emissions, reduce dependence upon foreign oil, and ensure benefits to consumers from the trading in such allowances. This plan will eventually slow global warming while giving businesses the flexibility to innovate and trade credits as they see fit.
It is far past due for us to take steps to reduce the very real threat of global warming. Know that I will continue to push for strong, proactive measures to make our world a safer, cleaner place to live.
