Congressmen Andrews and Adler Announce $3.2 Million in Defense Funding for Alternative & Renewable Energy Project and Green Jobs
On February 12, 2009, Congressman Rob Andrews (D-NJ 1st) joined Congressman John Adler (D-NJ 3rd) and President Hal Raveché of Stevens Institute to announce $3.2 million in federal funding obtained for the production of alternative and renewable energy. This project, which is designated to develop, pilot and put into production bio-fuels, will create primary alternative energy and power generation for military bases within the United States and in theaters of military operations abroad. McGuire AFB has embraced the project in keeping with its enduring theme of preserving resources. While this initiative is necessary to limit our country’s dependence on foreign oil and address increasing environmental concerns, the potential for job generation is perhaps most significant aspect given the current tight job market.
With this funding, the project is expected to create over 350 jobs within a few years, many of which will be created immediately. Specifically, there will be an immediate demand for jobs in the areas of technological development and as the project reaches the piloting, manufacturing, and distribution phases the need for skilled workers will grow exponentially. Additionally, the potential for job creation far exceeds employment within the Department of Defense; rather, once the technology has been developed and commercialized, New Jersey will be the beneficiary of a new and innovative bio-fuel industry that will improve the State economy and create opportunities for the public far into the future.
As our country faces its highest unemployment rate in 16 years, this funding will provide steady income for the families of those immediately employed, as well as increase spending in the community and subsequently stimulate the economy. In light of our growing economic challenges, Congressman Andrews continues to work with academic institutions and government agencies like Stevens Institute and the United States Air Force to take a proactive approach to withstand the current economic downturn.
