Congressmen Andrews visits L-3 to announce $2.4 million in federal funding
Rep. Andrews Preserves and Creates Local Jobs In Uncertain Times

On Monday, February 23, Congressman Rob Andrews (D-NJ) joined Greg Roberts, President of L-3 Communication Systems-East to announce $2.4 million in federal funding for Army equipment produced by L-3 that the Congressman successfully included in Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2009 (H.R. 2638; P.L. 110–329) for FY09.

The Camden, NJ division of L-3, which designs and produces secure communication systems and encryption solutions for the US government, has allocated this funding for future manufacturing of a sensor product for the Battlefield Anti-Intrusion System (BAIS) program. BAIS, as it is referred to by military operations, is used by infantry platoons, Special Forces and small units to secure and protect defensive positions and by military police units for the security of personnel or assets. Specifically, BAIS is a small and lightweight device that operates as a sensor to classify threats entering a protected area and provide additional information such as threat count and threat movement.

While this funding has been directed to the production of BAIS, it also has a significant local economic impact. Specifically, with this funding L-3 has preserved up to 50 jobs for future BAIS work and allowed for the creation of up to 100 jobs for this and other DoD programs that the Congressman has supported. As our country faces its highest unemployment rate in 16 years, Congressman Andrews continues to work with companies, like L-3 Communications, in taking a proactive approach to retain jobs in the region, while addressing our country’s protection and security.
