Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission approves $119M in Federal Stimulus money for local transportation improvements
Today, Congressman Andrews announced over $119 million in federal funding for local transportation and infrastructure improvements. This announcement follows Congressman Andrews' visit to the White House last week, where President Obama recognized him for his strong efforts toward modernizing our nation's transportation system. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), this funding is designed to put Americans back to work and get our economy growing again. According to estimates provided by the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, South Jersey is expected to create or preserve up to 4,000 jobs for local projects.
Among the many projects being funded, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission gave its required approval of over ten projects for road and infrastructure improvements in Camden and Gloucester Counties, which includes $84 million for repaving stretches of Rt. 295 that span both counties. Projects in Camden County include fixing the flood problem at Admiral Wilson Boulevard, in which $13 million has been allocated, replacing guardrails lining county roads, resurfacing damaged streets in Camden City, and $7M for the Rt. 295 Direct Connection project designed to ease travel at one of the busiest and most dangerous interchanges in our region. In Gloucester County, over $8 million will be spent on improving roadways in Franklin and Monroe Townships, upgrading the county's pedestrian crosswalk facilities, constructing traffic signals along Rt. 45 & Mullica Road, and several other projects.
At a time when our nation's unemployment has risen to a 25-year high, Congressman Andrews continues to support legislation like the Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which sets out to improve our nation's infrastructure while putting thousands to work.
