Lockheed Martin Receives $16M in FY09 Federal Funding for Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense
On Monday, Congressman Andrews visited Lockheed Martin in Moorestown, NJ to announce their receipt of nearly $16 Million in federal funding that was allocated out of the FY2009 Defense Appropriations bill. This increase in funding was awarded for continued production and implementation of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Signal Processing (Aegis BSP) program, which is one of the most advanced weapons systems used by the United States Navy. This remarkable technology uses powerful computers and radars to track and destroy enemy targets. Along with former Congressman Jim Saxton, Congressman Andrews dedicated his efforts in the House Armed Services Committee to make sure the government invests in the finest technology available to maintain our nation's security.
This funding has greatly accelerated the nation's sea-based missile defense capability and continues to implement new technologies to preserve our freedom. However, in addition to making our nation more secure, Lockheed Martin has used this investment to preserve up to 900 jobs, the majority of which are local to South Jersey. In fact, Lockheed Martin has either created or preserved up to 800 jobs in Moorestown and 100 contractor positions nationwide, which is a direct result in the government's boost in Aegis' funding.
Earlier in the 111th Congress, Rep. Andrews was selected by House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton to lead a special Congressional panel to address the ongoing challenge of defense acquisition reform. Upon his appointment, Congressman Andrews stated that "during these economic times, it is vital that we ensure our defense acquisition system provides the best to our warfighters while making the most efficient use of the taxpayer's money."
As Chairman of the Panel on Defense Acquisition Reform, Rep. Andrews is proud of the use of this funding as a cost-effective and efficient method of maintaining our national security and reinvesting into the American economy.
