The transcript and details released about Flight 93 during the final stages of the Zacarias Moussaoui trial, was a vivid example of the horrors of September 11, 2001 and a reminder of the security threats our country faces every day. But, overshadowing the hatred and intolerance of the terrorists aboard Flight 93, was the patriotism and heroism of the crew, passengers and the flight attendants.
We have heard stories before about what happened on that plane that day, but after reading the transcript and hearing the court testimony, the details really come to life. I can imagine what was going through the passengers' minds when they found out from friends and family that two other planes had been hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center. I am sure they were frightened and confused, but after realizing what the hijackers intended to do--they mustered the strength and courage to fight for their lives and the lives of their fellow Americans. Because of their bravery and resolve, the hijackers were unable to finish their mission and many innocent people were saved.
During testimony by Moussaoui he said he would like to see similar attacks “every day.” This is the type of mindset that terrorists and fanatics across the world also have. Even though there has not been another attack in the United States since 9-11, terrorists have tried and are still trying to take the lives of innocent people in our country.
Top terror leaders have warned that additional attacks on U.S. interests here and abroad are likely. The threat does not end with al-Qaeda; there are other extremist groups intent on using violence and destruction as tools to dismantle the foundations of our democracy.
In order to create a more secure nation, we have to take preventative action--we must take the fight to the terrorists. The War on Terror, unlike previous world conflicts, is not against a nation state; it is not against an army as we know it. This struggle is against fanatics, like Moussaoui, who want to use terror and violence to achieve their goals. They make no distinction between a civilian and a soldier. They are not interested in peaceful resolutions and are certainly willing to give their lives for their cause. The Moussaoui trial has been a reminder to every American that these terrorists groups are dedicated to their cause and will not back down. Our resolve must be even stronger. The security of our country depends on it. |
