Oregon Department of Transportation, Highway Division
Funds would be used to replace the Interstate Bridge with a safer and more efficient structure, extend light rail to Hayden Island and downtown Vancouver, create a world-class bicycle/pedestrian crossing, and construct highway improvements, including fixing seven interchanges and adding auxiliary lanes between these closely spaced interchanges to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of crashes. The I-5 Columbia River Crossing is a long-term, comprehensive and sustainable multi-modal solution to the economic, safety, and environmental challenges caused by the current Interstate Bridge over the Columbia River. The bridge and its approaches in Oregon and Washington—a five-mile area known as the Bridge Influence Area—cause the worst traffic congestion in the Portland/Vancouver metro region. This area is also one of the biggest bottlenecks on the I-5 trade corridor, one of the nation's top freight routes.
