Funds efforts to engage the domestic rail car industry in the design and manufacture of single-level, self-propelled passenger rail vehicles.  No domestic manufacturer currently produces these vehicles in compliance with Federal Railroad Administration and accessibility standards.  TriMet owns an option to build up to 18 more of these vehicles under a contract from the Washington County Communter Rail Project with a company that has now gone out of business.  TriMet intends to first attempt to procure these vehicles from a metal fabrication firm engaged in the debt resolution proceedings of the now-defunct company.  If that procurement cannot be completed satisfactorily, TriMet would turn to the larger market.  In either case, TriMet would oversee the final design and manufacture of a new vehicle prototype.
