Funds two project components: critical repairs to Union Station and the consolidation of Greyhound services in a new facility immediately adjacent to Union Station. In combination, these efforts would maintain a multi-modal transportation hub in Portland's central city with connections to other local public transportation, as well as promote and provide for growth in ridership of inter- and intra-city passenger services. Union Station currently poses significant exposure to health, safety, and building integrity risks, which will become increasingly critical and expensive to address if action is not taken to rehabilitate this significant historic asset. Union Station rehabilitation would potentially include roof repairs, seismic upgrades, accessibility improvements, window replacement, storm water drainage repairs, new electrical power distribution and fire protection, and terracotta repairs. The construction of new facilities for Greyhound in the immediate vicinity are necessary due to inefficient operations and high overhead costs at the existing location near Union Station. Investing federal funds in the project at this time is most cost effective option and would result in the immediate creation of design, engineering, and construction jobs. A superior multi-modal transportation system would also enhance the long-term vitality of the region.
