WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Mike Rogers reminded folks today that to be eligible to receive a tax rebate from the recently-passed Economic Stimulus plan, all Alabamians must file with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) – even if they do not normally file taxes.
Rogers said for seniors or folks with lower or fixed incomes, the IRS has created a special form for the tax rebates – Free File – they should consider using. He said the rebates were signed into law after Congress passed The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, which should provide tax rebates to millions of Alabamians to help boost the economy.
“Folks need to remember they must file with the IRS by April 15 – even if they don’t normally file – to receive a stimulus plan tax rebate,” Rogers said. “If you don’t file, the IRS won’t consider you eligible to receive a rebate.”
According to the IRS, the first tax rebates should be mailed in late May. Rebates are mailed according to one’s Social Security number.
Rogers encouraged citizens to call one of his offices with questions about the rebates. “This legislation was designed to help folks right when they may need it the most, and my office is here to assist in that process however we can.”
Rogers said citizens could also call the Montgomery IRS Center at 334-264-2453 for assistance, or call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Rogers has offices in Anniston at (256) 236-5655; Opelika at (334) 745-6221, and Montgomery at (334) 277-4210. - ### -
