Lincoln, Pryor, Berry Announce $388,000 for Counseling Services of Eastern Arkansas
Funding Provided by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representative Marion Berry (AR-01) today announced that Counseling Services of Eastern Arkansas will receive $388,407 in funding from the Office on Violence Against Women at the U.S. Department of Justice.   The funding will be used to support The Transitional Housing Assistance Program for Victims of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Stalking or Sexual Assault. This program supports projects that provide assistance to victims who are in need of transitional housing, short-term housing assistance, and related support services.

“I’ve visited with victims of domestic abuse and heard stories about the challenges they face,” Lincoln said.  “Families experiencing serious, life-threatening situations deserve quality services to help them in their time of need.  This grant will allow many families to access housing resources to help protect their families and keep them safe.”

“The Counseling Services of East Arkansas provides life-saving services to victims of abuse throughout eastern Arkansas.  I am pleased that these recovery funds will enhance the organizations’ transitional housing program so that those affected by domestic violence can recover and create a stronger, safer environment for themselves and their families,” Pryor said.

"Domestic violence has a devastating effect on families and communities, and rural areas are especially vulnerable," said Berry. "This funding will help the Counseling Services of East Arkansas continue to provide information, services and resources to those individuals who would otherwise be unable to receive help.

The Transitional Housing Assistance Program was reauthorized and amended by the Violence Against Women Act of 2005. Funding for this program must be used to support programs that provide transitional housing, short-term housing assistance, and services designed to enable individuals fleeing domestic violence situations to locate and secure permanent housing. In addition to providing services such as transportation, counseling, child care services, case management, and employment counseling, the program aims to help individuals achieve greater self-sufficiency.
