| WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Marion Berry (AR-01) announced that the City of Osceola will receive a $1.46 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant to help build an unloading facility, which would expand grain operations, and other river port improvements at the Osceola River Port.
"The Port of Osceola has experienced a significant increase in commerce over the past few years and I am pleased the EDA recognizes the tremendous economic potential of Osceola Harbor," said Berry. "These federal dollars will contribute to the long-term economic growth of Osceola by attracting new businesses which will spur job creation and ultimately boost growth for the region. I'd like to commend Judge McGuire and Mayor Kennemore for their tireless effort on this project as well as their vision for increasing economic opportunities for Mississippi County."
"I'm pleased the citizens of Mississippi County voted and passed the half-cent sales tax to help contribute to the Osceola River Port improvements," said Mississippi County Judge, Steve McGuire. "We are one of the few counties in the state that have a county-wide sales tax and it has been helpful for improving our efforts for economic development. In addition to our geographic location and infrastructure, this investment in the port will be an asset for existing industries and puts us in an even more competitive position to attract new business for Mississippi County. I would like to thank Congressman Berry for his continuing efforts in supporting our community."
"I'd like to thank Congressman Berry for a job well done," said Mayor of Osceola, Dickie Kennemore. "This funding will create 35 new jobs for the City of Osceola and the surrounding community as well as increase the tonnage capacity out of the port. Since our income from the port is based on the tonnage, this project also means increased revenue for the city. These improvements are a win-win for industry, agriculture, the City of Osceola and Northeast Arkansas."
As a member of the Appropriations Committee, Congressman Berry has secured an authorization to construct new docks to enhance the port's capability as well as funding to provide proper maintenance of a navigation channel for year-round access for barge transportation.
EDA is an agency within the U.S. Commerce Department and supports the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. Its mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness and preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.
