Lincoln, Pryor, Berry Announce Disaster Relief Funding for Phillips Community College

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representative Marion Berry (AR-01) announced today that Phillips Community College's Stuttgart Campus will receive $31,042 from the Department of Education's Higher Education Disaster Relief Program.  Funds will be used to defray expenses including lost revenue resulting from the May 10, 2008 tornado in Stuttgart, Arkansas.

“Phillips Community College plays a vital role in the Stuttgart community by equipping students with the tools and resources they need to be successful,” said Lincoln.  “These funds will allow the college to continue to help students achieve their goals, despite the losses the campus sustained as a result of last year’s destructive tornado. I am pleased that the federal government is doing its part to help with these recovery efforts, and I’ll continue to do all I can to ensure our state receives the resources we need to stay strong.”

“Sunday’s tornado caused considerable damage and disruption throughout Stuttgart,” said Pryor.  “I’m pleased these federal funds will help offset the costs Phillips Community College incurred.”

“Last year’s tornado damage unfortunately left a lasting impact on the community,” said Berry.  “This funding will help Phillips Community College rebuild their school and continue providing their students with a high-quality education.”

The Department of Education's Higher Education Disaster Relief Grants Program provides funds to institutions of higher education located in an area affected by natural disasters occurring during 2008 for which the President declared a major disaster under Title IV of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act of 1974. Funding may only be used to defray the expenses incurred by institutions that were forced to close, relocate, or whose operations were impaired as a result of damage caused by a natural disaster.
