| WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representative Marion Berry (AR-01) today announced that Sharp County is the recipient of a $1,564,500 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The funds will be used to help with cleanup efforts from the January ice storm.
“January’s ice storm caused significant damage in our state,” Lincoln said. “In the days after the storm, our first responders and community members answered the call by assisting in the recovery response. I am pleased that the federal government is doing its part to help with cleanup efforts.”
“Cleaning up the damage and debris required considerable time and manpower,” Pryor said. “I’m pleased FEMA came through with more federal resources to help offset the costs Sharp County incurred.”
“The January ice storm has left a trail of damage that is still being addressed by many areas across the state,” said Berry. “This funding will provide local officials the resources they need to recover from this natural disaster and rebuild their communities.”
The United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), along with a representative from Sharp County, used a debris estimating tool (DET) to map the debris in the county. Nearly 14,000 trees and stumps were damaged in Sharp County because of the ice buildup. This money will help fund the removal of limbs from those trees.
