Berry Praises Passage of Wolf House Study

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Congressman Marion Berry (AR-01) praised the passage of a bill that would allow the National Park Service to conduct a study to determine the feasibility of including the Wolf House in Norfork, Arkansas as part of the National Park Service.

"As the oldest 2-story log structure and courthouse west of the Mississippi River, the Wolf House is a national treasure," said Berry.  "This legislation authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to study the feasibility of designating the Wolf House as a unit of the National Park System, which will take steps to preserve an important piece of our state's history for future generations."

The Wolf House two-story log building and is the oldest standing territorial structure west of the Mississippi River.  It was constructed in 1829 as the first permanent courthouse for Izard County and was named after Jacob Wolf, who was a representative to the General Assembly of Arkansas Territory. After the county seat moved in 1835, the structure became his family home.
The language on the bill that passed was based on HR 442, which was introduced by Congressman Berry on January 12, 2007.
