Lincoln, Pryor, and Snyder Announce $70,000 for UCA Study Abroad Program

Washington, DC – Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representative Vic Snyder (AR-02) today announced that $70,000 in grant funding has been issued to the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) through the Department of Education's Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program.

The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program provides grants to support overseas projects for teachers, students, and faculty.  This program holds an annual competition, and projects must focus on the humanities, social sciences, or languages.

The UCA project will be led by Dr. Brooks Green and will work to expand understanding of Russian culture and ecology through service learning.  The 4-6 week program enables 13 geography educators to travel to south-central Siberia to observe, study, and learn about the diverse culture and history of this unique area of Russia.

"With this grant, Arkansas educators will be able to experience Russian culture first-hand, instead of simply reading about it in a book or viewing it on film.  Not only will these teachers enhance their own learning, they will also be able to share their experiences with students and other educators across the state.  UCA has been one of Arkansas's leading institutions of higher learning, and I'm pleased to see the university earn this funding," said Lincoln.

"This funding provides a once in a lifetime opportunity for Arkansas geography teachers," said Pryor.  "By gaining first-hand knowledge about the diverse culture and history of south-central Siberia, they will be able to enhance their student's understanding of Russia and its role in world affairs."

"I applaud UCA for applying and receiving such a grant to help Arkansas teachers better understand Russian studies to integrate into their geography curriculum," said Snyder.  "This program sounds like a great opportunity to enhance education studies."

The Department of Education International Education Programs Service (IEPS) funds 14 international education programs.  These programs complement each other and service a variety of participants through training programs, research, development projects, and fellowships.  Under the Fulbright-Hays Act, IEPS administers four overseas programs that provide grants to individuals and institutions of higher education for projects in foreign languages and area studies.
