Delegation Announces Grants for
Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program

Harding, Henderson and UALR to Benefit

(Washington, D.C.) Senators Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln, along with Congressmen Vic Snyder (AR-02) and Mike Ross (AR-04) today announced that Harding University, Henderson State University and University of Arkansas at Little Rock have been awarded a total of $685,000 by the U.S. Department of Education under the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program.

The members of the delegation said the program is to promote projects designed to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees among disadvantaged college students.  Harding University will receive $231,000; Henderson State University will receive $226,600; and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock will receive $227,447.  Each school is recommended to select approximately 25 participants.

Specifically, this funding will help prepare students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.  Projects include academic counseling, financial aid assistance, mentoring, research opportunities, seminars, summer internships, and tutoring.  Guidance for students seeking admission and financial aid for graduate programs is also supported.

“This funding will make doctoral work possible for many more bright and talented Arkansas students,” said Pryor. “It is a wise educational investment that will continue to benefit our state for years to come and allow our communities to successfully compete in today’s global economy.”

"Helping students to pursue postbaccalaureate degrees is one of the smartest investments we can make as a nation," said Lincoln.  "I applaud Harding University, Henderson State University, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for seeking these federal funds that will help students reach their full academic potential."

"Ph.D. scholars provide an invaluable foundation to the core of research, exploration, and learning," said Snyder. "These funds will give motivated students more opportunities to realize their full potential and make immense contributions to the world."

"It is important that we make every effort to provide interested college students with the resources and tools needed to work towards a post graduate degree," Ross said. "This program will provide more Arkansans with the opportunity to continue their academic journey which will directly benefit our towns and communities."
