| (Washington, D.C.) U.S. Representative Mike Ross (AR-04) presided over the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday, October 4th, when the House cast its 943rd recorded vote in the First Session of the 110th Congress, breaking the previous record of recorded votes in one session of Congress. The previous record stood at 942 recorded votes set on October 15, 1978, during the Second Session of the 95th Congress.
“I am honored to have had this unique and historical opportunity to preside over the House of Representatives as this record of 943 recorded votes in the House of Representatives was set today,” Ross said. “I am proud to be a part of this Congress and our work to bring about positive results for the working families of this country, and this record number of votes demonstrates our commitment to bringing worthwhile legislation before the House this year.” A recorded vote is one in which Members of the House of Representatives present cast an electronic ballot to show their support or opposition to the current motion. Under the Constitution, a recorded vote can be called when 20 percent of the Members request it. “I have always had an interest in parliamentary procedure dating back to my 10 years of service in the Arkansas State Senate,” Ross said. “Presiding over debate, procedural motions and votes in the House is a true privilege, and I am grateful to the Speaker of the House for this opportunity.” Earlier this year, Ross helped set another voting record in the House. On June 20th, Ross presided over 24 consecutive recorded votes in a single vote series which was the most in a single series of votes in U.S. House of Representatives history. Since the beginning of the 110th Congress, Ross has been frequently called upon by the Speaker of the House to preside over the U.S. House of Representatives where he has logged over 52 hours in the Speaker’s Chair. Because of this, and the weekly hour-long Special Order Ross leads as Co-chair of the fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition each Tuesday to demand fiscal responsibility and accountability from our government, Ross can frequently be seen on C-SPAN’s live coverage of the House floor. -30- |
