Ross Tells Corps To Reconsider Any Proposal
That Would Impact Campsites at 4th District Lakes

(Washington, D.C.) U.S. Representative Mike Ross (AR-04) has officially requested that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reconsider any proposals that would limit or close public use at numerous campsites at DeGray, Greeson or Ouachita Lakes.  Ross recently expressed his dissatisfaction with such proposals to the Commander of the Vicksburg District of the Corps, who oversees the maintenance of these three lakes.

“I am adamantly opposed to any proposal that would affect the public use of these lakes and I have sought a full explanation as to why a reduction in service at these lakes would be necessary,” Ross told Colonel Michael C. Wehr, Commander of the Vicksburg District Army Corps of Engineers.  “The consequences of implementing arbitrary reductions in service and operations could be detrimental to the recreational opportunities these three lakes offer to citizens of our state.

Ross pointed out that he successfully fought to secure full funding in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 House appropriations bill to fund the maintenance of these three lakes.

“I worked in this Congress to increase funding for the Army Corps of Engineers by $1.1 billion over the President’s request, yet he has threatened to veto this critical bill,” Ross said. “This is in part why I opposed the President’s budget because I recognize the importance of investing in infrastructure improvements in our own country, as well as in other important domestic priorities that cannot afford to be cut.

“I have sought a full explanation as to why a reduction in service at these lakes is necessary and have requested that any proposed plan be reconsidered and that any available options be evaluated,” Ross said. “I also take exception to the fact that the public did not first have the opportunity to share its input and concerns with the Corps.”

In addition, Ross encouraged citizens to contact the Vicksburg District Army Corps of Engineers with any concerns at: (601) 631-5010; or by mail at:  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District, E. Clay Street, Vicksburg, MS 39183.
