(WASHINGTON, D.C) - U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-01) today appointed rural Arizona’s top education leaders to serve on his “No Child Left Behind Congressional Advisory Council (NCLBCAC),” an ad hoc committee dedicated to examining and making recommendations to reform No Child Left Behind when it is reauthorized next year. The group will hold its introductory meeting next Wednesday, August 30, in Flagstaff, where members will meet with House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA), the highest ranking education leader in the House of Representatives, to address concerns about the legislation.
“I am grateful to the parents, teachers, school administrators, superintendents, and area businesspeople who have agreed to serve on this important panel,” said Rep. Renzi. “Not only will the committee serve as a clearinghouse to air concerns about No Child Left Behind, but it will make recommendations to reform the legislation, ensuring that rural Arizona’s unique educational needs are addressed during the reauthorization process. I look forward to working closely with all the members of the Advisory Council in the months ahead, and will listen closely to each of their recommendations to improve the quality of education and teaching in our schools.”
The NCLBCAC will hold a roundtable meeting with Chairman McKeon next Wednesday, August 30th, at 9:30 a.m. at W.F. Killip Elementary School, located at 2300 East 6th Avenue, in Flagstaff. The meeting will be open to the media, and will be followed by a press conference.
The House of Representatives approved the No Child Left Behind Act on December 13, 2001. Signed into law on January 8, 2002, the measure is a comprehensive overhaul of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) built on principles of accountability for results; local control and flexibility; expanded parental choice; and increased funding for what works.
