Renzi Announces $2.3 Million for Fire Breaks in Payson
Three-term Congressman Says Funds will protect rural Arizona from growing threat of Forest Fires

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-01) today announced that Northern Gila County will receive $2.3 million from the U.S. Forest Service to help thin forests and construct new fire breaks, significantly helping to suppress fires before they endanger any homes or businesses.

“I am very pleased that the U.S. Forest Service has awarded this funding to suppress dangerous forest fires in the Payson area, ensuring the safety of rural Arizona families,” said Congressman Renzi.  “Forest thinning projects and fire breaks help fight fires even before they start, making this funding a tremendous victory for fire-prone Northern Gila County.  I look forward to continuing to work with our local officials to protect rural Arizonans from the dangers of forest fires.”

Renzi said that fuel breaks help slow and even stop the spread of wildfires because they provide fewer fuels to carry the flames. The breaks also provide firefighters with safe zones to take a stand against a wildfire, or retreat from flames if the need arises.

“I am delighted with all of Congressman Renzi’s efforts to secure this important funding to thin forests and construct new fire breaks in Gila County,” said Gila County Supervisor Joe M. Sanchez.  “Congressman Renzi’s hard work will ensure that homes and families in Payson are protected from dangerous forest fires that threaten our community every year.  I am grateful for this announcement, and look forward to continuing to work with Congressman Renzi to help all the people of Northern Gila County.”
