Renzi Announces Fire Grant for Flagstaff

Funds Will Help Purchase Diesel Exhaust Removal System

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-01) announced today that the Flagstaff Fire Department will receive $219,573 in federal funds to purchase a new diesel exhaust removal system.  The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under the Assistance to Firefighters Grants.

“I am pleased that the Flagstaff Fire Department will be awarded these vital funds to purchase a diesel exhaust removal system,” said Congressman Renzi.  “This grant is an important step towards ensuring that our firefighters and support staff work in a safe and healthy environment.  I look forward to continuing to work with local officials to ensure that our first responders in Flagstaff have the tools they need to protect our community from harmful disasters.”

“On behalf of the City of Flagstaff, Mayor Joe Donaldson, the City Council, and the members of the Flagstaff Fire Department, I would like to thank Congressman Rick Renzi for his assistance in the receipt of the Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant,” said Fire Chief Michael Iacona. “This Grant will assist the Department in providing a healthier environment for our firefighters by protecting them from toxins from vehicle exhaust within their stations.”

The department plans on using this grant to purchase a state of the art diesel exhaust removal system for four different fire stations. Currently, stations without this system are being clogged with excess diesel contaminants from fire fighting vehicles, which is not a healthy environment for the department’s employees. This grant is a part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to strengthen the Nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire related hazards.
