WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-01) announced that the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff will be receiving a federal grant of nearly $1.4 million. The funds, provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF), will be used for a project entitled "Collaborative Research: Star Formation in Subcritical Environments." This study will help lead to an improved understanding of star formation in all disk galaxies. The funds will be distributed throughout the next five years, with $155, 772 as the first installment.
“This is great news for our researchers in Flagstaff,” said Congressman Renzi. “I am pleased that the NSF continues to support and recognize research projects like this and encourages the study of science.”
The National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency that was created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science. During the 109th Congress, funding for the National Science Foundation was approved by Congress through the Science, State, Justice, Commerce and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2006 (H.R. 2862) with the support of Congressman Renzi.
