May 8, 2007—Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) last night sent the previously announced letter to Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) regarding the film which PBS later refused to air.  Several other Members of Congress, both Republican and Democrat, joined with Congressman Franks in issuing the letter to the CPB, including Representatives Sherman, Akin, Cubin, Hoekstra, Royce, King, and Walsh.  The letter states in part:

“This documentary addresses a critical issue — the struggle between moderate Muslims and Islamist ideologues for the soul and future of Islam.

“…You are to be commended for underwriting this film, ‘Islam vs. Islamists: Voices from the Muslim Center.’  We understand that the film’s producers went through a very competitive process to receive the grant which funded its production.  Yet, despite a press release on January 30, 2006 in which the CPB announced that this film would be included in the initial eight films of the series presented by WETA, it was not included.

“…In our view, Americans have a right to view ‘Islam vs. Islamists,’ a program that was almost entirely funded with their tax dollars.  It is in the public’s best interest to prevent any further delay in the airing of this film to a national prime time audience.  If PBS chooses not to air the film to such an audience, then clearly the interests of free speech, education, and especially fiscal responsibility would be furthered if CPB permitted the widest possible distribution via all avenues at the earliest possible time.”

The letter inquires as to the rationale used for refusing to air the film, and urges that if PBS will not arrange for the film’s viewing, to allow the producers to secure the film for other distribution outlets. 

Congressman Franks is serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, and is Ranking Member on the Constitution Subcommittee.
