| Washington, DC – Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) applauds her colleagues on the Judiciary Committee for unanimously passing H.R. 1525, the Internet Spyware (I-SPY) Prevention Act of 2007 today. The bill, which now moves to the full House of Representatives, addresses the most egregious activities that are conducted via spyware and makes those activities criminal offenses punishable by both imprisonment and fines.
“I’m glad that my colleagues on the Judiciary Committee unanimously voted in favor of moving the bill forward,” noted Rep. Zoe Lofgren. “Spyware is a problem for computer users. This committee has just demonstrated its willingness to address this problem in approving this bill. The technology behind spyware has aspects similar to the technology responsible for the intuitive, seamless interaction with the web that consumers expect and demand. This bill focuses on behavior, and does not criminalize technology. That’s why it has such broad support among tech-savvy Americans.”
