WASHINGTON, DC – The San Joaquin Valley could receive a greater emphasis for future wastewater treatment projects, potentially creating much-needed new jobs, Congressman Dennis Cardoza announced today.

The House of Representatives passed the Water Quality Investment Act of 2009 today. It authorizes nearly $14 billion to address wastewater infrastructure needs, as well as providing additional funding to address sewer overflow and water reuse and reclamation projects. Estimates show that for every $1 billion invested in water infrastructure, approximately 35,000 jobs are created.

Congressman Cardoza secured language in the legislation ensuring cash-strapped areas with high unemployment rates would receive priority status for receiving additional state assistance to help undertake their projects.

“There is much work to be done to turn this economy around. However, every step is going to help. This is one way we can try to leverage legislation to try and bring desperately needed jobs and economic stimulus to the Central Valley,” said Congressman Cardoza.
