| WASHINGTON – Congressman Dennis Cardoza (D-Atwater) today applauded the reauthorization of the bipartisan Voting Rights Act (VRA), and voiced his strong disapproval of efforts by some Republicans to undermine the most effective civil rights law ever enacted. The Voting Rights Act, enacted in 1965, ensures that all citizens can exercise their right to vote without intimidation or obstacles like poll taxes and literacy tests. Proposed amendments to the bill, which were defeated, would have severely weakened and undermined the act. “The right to vote is the very foundation of American Democracy,” said Cardoza. “It is a shame that some in Congress attempted to undermine this historic bill. I am very pleased that efforts to weaken the Voting Rights Act have been defeated, and that the act has been renewed.” |
