Congresswoman Capps secures $3.2 million for San Luis Obispo County Transportation Projects

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Lois Capps secured $3.2 million for San Luis Obispo County transportation projects over the next six years in the Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (TEALU) Conference Report, which the House approved today. The bill now goes to President Bush for his signature.

Included in the transportation spending bill is $2.72 million in federal funding to widen the Santa Maria River Bridge, which was a top priority for San Luis Obispo Council of Governments and Santa Barbara County Association of Governments. The widening of the bridge will improve operations and safety and relieve congestion.

“Widening the Santa Maria Bridge will go a long way to help drivers on the Central Coast easily get to and from work, attractions, and homes of families and friends,” Congresswoman Capps said.  “This is a great example of federal dollars coming back to work right here on the Central Coast, and I am confident this project will improve the quality of life in our community.”

The Santa Maria River Bridge is located on the main highway connection between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties and is the primary north-south highway along the coast.  Commuters especially use the bridge to drive between southern San Luis Obispo County and the rapidly growing area around the city of Santa Maria. As currently proposed, the bridge would be widened to include three travel lanes in each direction, full eight-foot shoulders, and separated bike and pedestrian pathways.

Capps also secured $320,000 for the construction of a Sea-to-City bike path from San Luis Obispo to Avila Beach. This bicycle path and pedestrian corridor will provide an extensive recreation and travel way for residents and tourists, allowing for the unique experience of either enjoying distinct portions of the trail or traveling from downtown San Luis Obispo to Avila Beach

Additionally, $240,000 is earmarked for the construction of the Pismo Beach Promenade on the north side of Pismo Pier which will help boost economic development in San Luis Obispo County.  The Promenade is a very popular attraction for visitors and residents of south San Luis Obispo County.  This phase extends the existing promenade to the north to connect Main Street to the Pismo Pier.

“This bill is the framework for federal transportation funding over the next six years,” Capps said. “These local projects will improve economic productivity, relieve congestion, increase mobility options for all travelers and make our transportation system safer.”
