Washington, D.C. - In a close vote today on the United States Congress, a slim majority of House members voted down an amendment co-authored by Congressman Howard Berman (CA-28), Congressman Adam Schiff (CA-29), and Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-27). The amendment, which received 178 votes in support, would have allowed Burbank and Van Nuys Airports to adopt non-discriminatory curfews applicable to operators from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
“For years Valley residents have pursued a solution to the problem of nighttime noise through every means available to them, and I commend these dedicated residents for their perseverance,” said Congressman Howard Berman. “I firmly believe that local residents and Congressional Representatives know what is best for their communities and it is unfortunate that partisan politics can get in the way as it did today.”
“I have long supported this effort to achieve much needed noise relief, and I will not let this setback deter me or Valley residents from continuing this fight,” added Berman. “Let me be clear, I will not stop pursing a legislative solution until the FAA finally removes the bureaucratic roadblocks that are preventing a curfew from being adopted at both Burbank and Van Nuys Airports.”
In addition to jointly offering an amendment to the FAA Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2011, H.R. 658, Congressmen Berman, Schiff, and Sherman co-authored the Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act to allow Bob Hope and Van Nuys Airports to adopt curfews.
