Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. Howard Berman called for the immediate passage of H.R. 9, the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization. House Democrats believe it is critical that Congress quickly enact H.R. 9, which would strengthen and renew the expiring provisions of the Act for another 25 years and reaffirm an enduring principal of our democracy: that every citizen is guaranteed the right to vote.
We still have a great distance to go in order to live up to our nation’s ideals of equality and opportunity. Our democracy depends on protecting the right of every American citizen to vote in every election. We must honor the legacy of all who died in the struggle for civil rights. We must renew our commitment to remove obstacles to the right to vote. House Democrats have led the fight to protect the right to vote. We will not rest until the expiring sections of the Voting Rights Act are strengthened and reauthorized.
