South El Monte, Calif. - Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32) presented military commendations to two veterans in the 32nd Congressional district in two separate presentations.
“I believe it is the responsibility of our government to honor those who served our nation with courage and pride,” said Congresswoman Solis. “These medals are long overdue.”
Veteran Rodolfo Q. Gomez, 81, enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 6, 1943 and served during World War II as a refueling Unit Operator. He was honorably discharged on January 21, 1946.
Gomez, of South El Monte, distinguished himself for his involvement in the New Guinea and Luzon battles during World War II.
He was presented with the following medals: Good Conduct Medal; Honorable Service Lapel button World War II; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars; World War II Victory Medal; and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
Earlier in the week, Congresswoman Solis presented veteran Gilbert Garza with three bronze stars along with a lapel button in a home visit.
Garza enlisted in the Army in 1946 and was stationed in Greenland. He later re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and trained in the Army Ranger School in Fort Benning, Ga. was assigned to the 315th Combat Engineer Corps.
Garza was presented with the following medals: the Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, the World War II Victory Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal.
