Rep. Watson on the "Olympics of Oppression" |
||||
|
Washington, DC— Rep. Diane Watson joined a bipartisan, bicameral group of Senators and Congressmen highlighting worldwide human rights abuses by China leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The press conference was hosted by Senators Brownback and Menendez (D-NJ) and Representatives Frank Wolf (R-VA) and Diane E. Watson (D-CA). "There is no doubt that China has become an important economic player in the world and a close economic partner of the United States," said Rep. Watson. "It was once believed that China's growing economic wealth would temper its extensive record of gross human rights violations. Obviously the result is much different than the much anticipated outcome. A rising economic tide may lift many boats but in the case of China the rising tide has also capsized the voices of many who are committed to human rights, due process, fairness, justice and eqality. We cannot continue to let that happen." "In short, China must change the way it does business at home and abroad. Its current model is neither viable nor sustainable over the long term," stated Rep. Watson. Today's press conference included a wide range of groups from around the world highlighting the numerous human rights abuses in various countries including China, Sudan,Tibet, Burma and others.
