Rep. Diane Watson on the passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy |
||||
|
The world mourns the enormous loss of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, a giant among public servants, and the last of a generation of Kennedy brothers who leave a peerless legacy of public service. With his passing, Camelot’s flag furls at half-mast for the lion and closes an era of vast accomplishments. I extend my sympathy to his wife, Vicki, to his children and grandchildren, and to all Americans who will feel this tremendous loss. Kennedy immersed himself into the cause of public service. In the U.S. Senate he found his passion, his voice, and his work. He committed himself to establishing a safety net that guarantees the protection and welfare of Americans. Ted Kennedy’s legislative track record reflects a history of the progress in the area of civil rights, voting rights, education, healthcare and a myriad of other social services. At the Democratic National Convention in August 2008, Kennedy stepped again onto the stage of history, and beckoned a young man to come forth and claim leadership of the mightiest nation in the world – the United States of America. There is a mighty tribute we can offer in Senator Edward Kennedy’s memory; the passage of universal health care that he declared to be “the commitment of his life." Senator Kennedy deserves it. America needs it. Let’s do it! |
