Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Venice) has signed on as an original co-sponsor of the National Forest Roadless Area Conservation Act (H.R. 3692), which seeks permanent protection for 58.5 million acres of America’s pristine national forestlands.
“Preserving America’s remaining wilderness is absolutely essential,” said Harman. “This country’s natural heritage is one of our greatest assets. Protecting forests benefits more than just future generations, it promotes biodiversity and maintains renewable sources of clean water and clean air. My constituents clearly understand this; they have been at the vanguard of environmental stewardship for years.”
Several conservation organizations sent Harman a letter thanking her for supporting the bill. “National forest roadless areas provide clean drinking water for more than 60 million Americans; fish and wildlife habitat for over 1,600 threatened, endangered or sensitive plant and animal species; and a multitude of recreational opportunities,” the letter said. It was signed by the League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Pew Environment Group, Defenders of Wildlife, Earthjustice, Environment America, the Wilderness Society and the National Center for Conservation Science & Policy.
