Washington, D.C. -- Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Venice), a member of the House Energy & Commerce Energy & Environment Subcommittee, issued the following statement following President Obama’s announcement of new nationwide rules for automobile emissions and mileage standards.
“By bringing the country’s emissions and mileage rules up to the standard set by California, President Obama has in one bold stroke leap-frogged years of industry and executive branch opposition,” said Harman.
Added Harman: “It is fitting for this announcement to come as the House Energy & Commerce Committee considers unprecedented energy legislation.”
The President’s proposal requires cars and light trucks built starting in model year 2012 to achieve 35.5 miles per gallon fuel economy by 2016 – four years ahead of current CAFE law. The House legislation includes bipartisan energy efficiency provisions Harman has authored on outdoor lighting and "cash for clunkers" appliances.
