Bilbray Announces $125,000 Grant

for Drug Free Community Coalition Efforts

(Washington D.C.)- Rep. Brian Bilbray announced today that the San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth has been awarded a $125,000 Drug Free Communities Support Program grant by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  The San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth, one of only 199 new grant recipients across the country, works to reduce substance abuse among youth. 

“This program is on the frontline of our ongoing effort to keep our youth drug-free,” said Rep. Bilbray.  “This new funding will help this program achieve its goal of preventing and reducing substance abuse among our youth.  Our campaign against youth drug use has been effective, but we must remain diligent in the pursuit to keep our children drug-free, off the streets and out of trouble.”

The Director of the ONDCP, John Walters, said, “Today, 860,000 fewer youths are using drugs than in 2001.  Together, as a Nation, we have made significant progress in our efforts against substance abuse.  Coalitions like the San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth are important partners in pushing back against the harms of drug use.”

The Drug Free Communities program provides grants of up to $625,000 over five years to community organizations that facilitate citizen participation in local drug prevention efforts.  The 199 new grantees were selected from 419 applicants through a competitive peer review process.  To quality for matching grants, all awardees must have at least a six-month history of working together on substance abuse prevention initiatives, develop a long-term plan to reduce substance abuse, and participate in a national evaluation of the Drug-Free Communities Program.

The San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth serves the cities of Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and the communities of Carmel Valley, Del Mar Heights, Sorrento Valley, La Costa and Rancho Santa Fe.
