(Washington D.C.)- In a bipartisan move to address the rising price of gas, Congressman Brian Bilbray (R-Carlsbad) joined a majority of his House colleagues last night in calling on President Bush to temporarily suspend sending thousands of barrels of oil into the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Instead, Bilbray and his colleagues would like to see the daily oil deposit – upwards of 70,000 barrels a day – put on the open market to increase available supplies.
“While broader long-term proposals are necessary to address this crisis, I believe that redirecting this oil supply to the open market might possibly bring down gas prices, perhaps anywhere between 5 and 24 cents a gallon, according to at least one expert,” said Bilbray. “It’s certainly a modest short-term initiative, but I am hopeful that it might relieve, at least to some degree, Americans’ pain at the pump.”
To further tackle this crisis, Bilbray believes that Congress should reverse its ill-advised ethanol mandate and expand research and development of new technologies and alternative sources of energy.
