BILBRAY CHALLENGES REPS. FILNER AND DAVIS TO SUPPORT TRANSPARENCY MEASURE

Congressman Brian Bilbray (CA-50) is challenging fellow San Diego County Congressional Delegation members Susan Davis (CA-53) and Bob Filner (CA-51) to sign on to a measure that will force the House Democratic leadership to allow a vote on H. Res. 479, legislation that would ensure that all taxpayer-funded earmarks in all congressional bills are publicly disclosed and subject to challenge and open debate on the House floor.

“At the start of the 110th Congress, voters were promised the most open, accountable and transparent government in history – today is a chance for us to live up to that promise,” said Bilbray, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.  “I’m hopeful that the entire San Diego County Congressional Delegation will lend their names to this renewed effort to make spending decisions more open and transparent.

More than 129 Republican Members have already signed onto the discharge petition, including fellow San Diego Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-49).  Under House rules, if the petition receives 217 signatures, Democratic leaders must schedule a vote on the transparency measure.

Congressman Bilbray has been a leader in the fight to make government more accountable and transparent.  He recently introduced H.R. 1733, the Appropriations and Transparency Act so that the current practice of adding earmarks at the last minute without proper review would be eliminated.  He also was one of the few members of Congress who posted his spending requests on his website, www.house.gov/bilbray, so that everyone could see what projects he supported.
