BILBRAY HIGHLIGHTS INNOVATION AND RESEARCH IN THE 50th DISTRICT

(Washington D.C.)- Congressman Brian Bilbray, Co-Chair of the Congressional Biomedical Research Caucus, hosted National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Director (NINDS) and National Institute of Health (NIH) Stem Cell Taskforce Chair Dr. Story Landis for a roundtable discussion of stem cell research and a tour of facilities at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research.  This was Dr. Landis’ first visit to a congressional district at the request of a Member of Congress.

“Our region has become a hub for the kinds of research and innovative practices that have resulted in remarkable advancements in science and medicine,” Bilbray said.  “Dr. Landis has seen first hand how the efforts of our local scientific and medical community are adding good years to our lives,” said Bilbray.

During the morning portion of the event, Congressman Bilbray and Dr. Landis joined a roundtable of distinguished researchers and academics at UCSD for an update on the progress of the San Diego Consortium for Regenerative Medicine—a consortium made up of the UCSD, the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Scripps Research Institute and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

“Biomedical research has led to extraordinary advances in stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurological disorders, but there is still much yet to be done,” noted Dr. Landis at the roundtable forum.  “This consortium of universities on the mesa represents the Federal government’s investment in the future. UCSD, Burnham, Salk and Scripps together fuel economic growth and are certain to lead to further advances in treatment for devastating disease.”

Later in the day, Congressman Bilbray joined Dr. Landis and noted Burnham researchers Drs. Jeanne Loring and Mark Mercola for a tour of a stem cell lab at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research.  “The Burnham Institute has become a pioneer of research and discovery that is setting the standard for the 21st Century,” Bilbray added.  “Their work has put the 50th District at the center of cutting-edge research that is revolutionizing science and medicine.”
