Congressman Salazar fights for an improved public safety communication system for Alamosa

$125,000 will go to upgrade current critical response communication system

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman John Salazar announced today that the U.S. House of Representatives has voted in favor of a $125,000 federal funding appropriation for the purchase and deployment of a mobile data system for the City of Alamosa public safety departments. The funding was requested by Congressman Salazar and was included in the 2009 Appropriations Bill for the Departments of Commerce, Science and Justice. The bill has passed the House and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

This appropriation will fund the acquisition of needed computers and hardware to improve communications, reduce response time, and more efficiently meet the needs of the Alamosa community. The City of Alamosa provides, through mutual aide, critical incident response law enforcement equipment and manpower to 19 Valley communities.  The Alamosa police department is in need of mobile data to better utilize resources and respond to the needs of the public.

On the funding for the mobile data system, Congressman Salazar offered the following statement:

“While rural communities may not experience the same number of crimes as larger cities, the nature and the impact of those crimes are no less serious. Alamosa and the communities served by the Alamosa Police Department deserve to have state-of-the-art communications equipment. Hopefully, this funding will help them continue to protect and serve the community.
