(Washington, DC) -- Rep. Wasserman Schultz made the following statement today regarding President Obama’s selection of Second Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter who has announced his retirement from the Court:
“I am thrilled with President Obama's historic and thoughtful selection of Judge Sonia Sotomayor for a seat on the Supreme Court. She has the background and depth of legal and judicial experience that will make her an exceptional Justice. With a sharp and independent mind, Judge Sotomayor has earned a record of integrity that has attracted bi-partisan support, first as an appointee to the District Court for the Southern District of New York by President George H.W. Bush and later as an appointee to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals by President Bill Clinton.
"As a member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, I am particularly pleased with the nomination of Judge Sotomayor. As a nominee to the Supreme Court she brings more experience on the bench, and more varied experience on the bench, than anyone previously appointed. As the first Hispanic and only the third woman to serve on the High Court, Judge Sotomayor is an inspiration for millions of Americans who will begin to see the diversity of our country reflected in the Supreme Court. I trust that she will continue her record of sound judgment and measured legal reasoning as a member of the Supreme Court.”
