Washington, D.C. -- The House Democratic leadership announced yesterday that Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald has been appointed to be Ranking Member of the powerful Committee on House Administration, and will be the first African American congresswoman in history to lead Democratic members on the committee.
"I want to thank Leader Pelosi and my Democratic colleagues for their confidence in my leadership abilities," said Congresswoman Millender-McDonald. "I am honored to lead our Democratic members on the Committee on House Administration and I look forward to working closely with Chairman Ney to foster the agenda that we will have before us."
The Committee on House Administration has oversight over all federal elections; the operations of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Smithsonian Institution and its affiliates, which includes the National Zoo; and the Library of Congress.
As Ranking Member, Congresswoman Millender-McDonald said her priorities on the committee will include pushing for full funding of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) to improve our nation's voting systems; enhancing and expanding Member services; and improving the working conditions and quality of life issues for Congressional and support staff.
Congresswoman Millender-McDonald has served on the Committee on House Administration since 2003. She is also a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Small Business, where she also serves as Ranking Member of its Subcommittee on Tax, Finance and Exports.
