Defense Bill Includes Kalaeloa Land Transfer for Rail Transit and Development

Washington, DC -- The 2007 Defense Authorization bill passed today by the U.S. House of  Representatives today includes a provision by Congressman Neil Abercrombie requiring the Navy to transfer 499 acres of land at the former Naval Air Station Barbers Point to private developers or local government agencies by the end of 2008.

“This marks a major step forward toward redeveloping the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station area that has sat vacant for far too long,” said Abercrombie. “The people of Hawaii need more housing, and local officials must make critical decisions about mass transit. This legislation supports both of those goals.”

The legislation requires the Navy to finalize an agreement to sell or lease the land, along the north edge of the former base, not later than September 30, 2008.
