The following is a news release from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Hawaii which manages the planning, design, construction, contingency engineering, real estate, environmental, and public works support for U.S. Navy shore facilities around the world:
PEARL HARBOR – Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii awarded Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc., of Honolulu, Hawaii an $11.3 million contract on April 27, using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.
The $11,344,500 firm fixed price task order under a multiple award construction contract for repairs to Naval Station (NAVSTA) Pearl Harbor’s pier Bravo 4 and wharf Bravo 5 located at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. The project had been scheduled for Fiscal Year (FY) 2010, but was moved up due to ARRA funding. Work is expected to be completed in May 2010.
“These repairs are exactly what the ARRA was designed for,” said Capt. Rick Kitchens, commanding officer, Naval Station Pearl Harbor. “Not only will the $11.3 million spent for work on pier B4 and wharf B5 keep people employed to refurbish our Naval Station’s infrastructure, these berths support intermediate and depot level maintenance performed by Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. By improving these berths, the shipyard will benefit, and as the state’s largest industrial employer, whatever is good for the shipyard is going to be good for the economy.”
Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc., will renovate the pier superstructure, concrete-supporting piles, and concrete deck curbing of pier Bravo 4, built in 1928, and wharf Bravo 5, built in 1932. The work will also include repairs to the asphalt topping, timber pile fender system, mooring hardware, and utilities that have become damaged or deteriorated due to years of exposure to the marine environment.
The Department of Defense received $7.4 billion from the ARRA, with $5.9 billion intended for construction and repair projects. NAVFAC Hawaii projects carried out with ARRA funds are intended to modernize Navy and Marine Corps shore infrastructure, enhance America’s energy independence, and sustain a steady and robust Maritime Force for decades. ARRA funds will be spent as quickly as possible in order to help put local contractors to work.
NAVFAC is a global organization with an annual volume of business in excess of $11 billion. As a major Navy Systems Command and an integral member of the Navy and Marine Corps team, NAVFAC delivers timely and effective facilities engineering solutions worldwide.
